Like many British families we should have taken out shares in baked beans before having children as we’ve single-handedly doubled their profits, but this humble legume is very versatile. There are a few ways to jazz up your standard tin of beans and one of my favourites is Southern Style Baked Beans which is smoky and sweet. This is a staple side for BBQ season at our house and it takes just a few minutes to make.

INGREDIENTS
1 tin of baked beans
2 tbsp BBQ sauce – the smokier the better
10-15 drops of smoked hot sauce

  • Tip the beans into a small saucepan and add the BBQ sauce and drops of hot sauce. Heat on a medium high heat stirring regularly to stop the sugar burning. Cook for 3 minutes to evaporate some of the liquid so you get a thick, smoky, sweet sauce.
